Only seven of Colonel Richard Townesend's ten sons married, and six of these have died out in the male line; they are all shown on Table I. Thus, Colonel Richard's descendants all derive through his second son Colonel Bryan Townsend. Colonel Bryan had nine sons but only five of them married and it is these five who constitute the various branches of the family:
- Richard of Castletownshend : Table II
- John of Skirtagh : Tables III, IIIA & IIIB
- Samuel of Whitehall : Table IV (Extinct in the male line)
- Philip of Derry : Tables V, VA, VB, VC, & VD
- Horatio of Donoughmore : Tables VI, VIA, VIB & VIC
