Edward was born in Queensland, Australia (Registration No 1866/B6129) but returned to Ireland with his parents in 1869 as his father was suffering ill health.

Edward studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and page 90 of the Trinity College Calendar 1893 records that he qualified BA First Class Honours in Winter 1892. Arthur Humphrey Townsend [6C17] and the brothers John Sealy Townsend [6B30] and William Richard Townsend [6B31] were undergraduates at the same time.

The 1901 Irish Census records Edward visiting his cousin Frederick George Gahan in Castlebar, Mayo in April that year. Frederick George Gahan was the son of Edward's aunt Katherine Jane Townsend [638]

Married 4 June 1902 (1). Una Jane Cummins (2) was the youngest daughter of Dr William Jackson Cummins MD (3) of Cork.

Edward was a civil engineer and a Member of The Institute of Civil Engineers. His last appointment was Divisional Engineer, Northern Division LMS Railway.

Edward and Una lived at The Sycamores, Leigh Road, Knutsford, Cheshire. She died in Salford Royal Hospital and they are both buried in Toft Cemetery, Knutsford.

Edward administered his father's estate in 1915. Page 697 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Administration of the estate of "The Reverend Horace Webb Townsend late of Skibbereen County Cork Clerk" who died on 10 January 1915, at Castletownshend was granted at Dublin on 20 July 1915 to " Edward H Townsend CE". Effects £2,315 9s 5d.

Edward was the executor of the will of his aunt Susannah Elizabeth Townsend [641]. Page 693 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Probate of the will of "Susan Elizabeth Townsend of 4 South Cliff Street Tenby County Pembroke”, who died on 14 November 1915, was granted at London 7 Match 1916 to "Edward HS Townsend". Resealed at Dublin 28 March 1916. Effects in Ireland £923 11s 3d.

Edward is shown as Edward Crawford (mother's maiden name) in 'An Officer of the Long Parliament'.

(1) Entry in the diary of Agnes Townsend [334] - 'June 4th 1902 Edward Hume T. married to Miss Cummins'.

(2) Una was born in 1874 and died on 21 November 1942.

(3) ‘Slater’s Royal National Directory of Ireland, 1894’ records under the heading ‘Cork Directory’ - “Cummins William Ashley MD. surgeon, 17, St. Patrick's Place”. There are a further five entries for William Cummins and from these it is deduced that he had several appointments in various hospitals in Cork; notably City of Cork Lying-In Hospital, Nile street, Union Hospital, Douglas road and Cork Hospital for Diseases of Women & Children, Infirmary road. Marion Hungerford Townsend [642] was working in the Cork Hospital for Diseases of Women & Children in 1894.
