Notes for Samuel Philip Townsend
Not shown in 'An Officer of the Long Parliament'.
Alumni Trinity College Dublin from Co Cork and Kerry 1593-1860 in Dr Casey's Collection records that Samuel was taught by Dr Stacpoole before he entered Trinity College, Dublin, on 12 October 1858 aged 17 as a pensioner who paid a fixed sum annually for his studies. Dr Stacpoole also tutored Samuel's brother, Edward Synge Townsend [6A12], and his distant cousin Horace Webb Townsend [634], who entered the University in 1860 and 1857 respectively.
The TCD Graduation List records that Samuel qualified BA in Winter 1862. His brother, Richard Horatio Townsend [6A10], Henry FitzJohn Townsend [260] and Horace Webb Townsend [634] were undergraduates at Trinity at the same time, whilst Rev Richard Townsend [337] was teaching at the university.
Under the Dunmanway entry on page 210 of Francis Guy’s County & City of Cork Directory 1875-76 there is an entry - "Townsend, Samuel Ardmartin". This could refer to Samuel or his very distant cousin Samuel Henry Townsend [425].
Griffith's Valuation of Ireland 1848-1864 shows Samuel owning land in the Parishes of Garrycloyne, Kilshannig and Knocktemple.
The 'Register of Landowners in County Cork 1876' shows that Samuel's estate of 282 acres was valued at £167 - 0s. (2005 equivalent - £12,074).
