Notes for Horatio Alfred Townshend

Horatio was educated at Rossal School, Fleetwood, Lancs, where his Uncle Dudley Ryder Townsend [5D36] taught mathematics before the First World War.

Married 16 October 1932 in Beckenham, Kent. Marjorie was the daughter of Captain Morris.

Following articles in Edinburgh, Horatio qualified as a chartered accountant. During World War II he was commissioned into the Royal Air Force (RAF) and served as an accountant in Egypt (1). Promoted to Flt Lieut on 1 December 1941 (2) it is not known when he left the RAF though there is an entry in the London Gazette of 10 September 1954 which shows him as a "Flight Lieutenant, retaining the rank of Squadron Leader" in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve.

Horatio died very suddenly shortly after attending his Aunt Florence's [5D41] funeral in Bournemouth. Marjorie died of cancer in 1961.
