Notes for Patricia Anne Townshend (Pat)

Pat was educated in Beckenham, Kent, following which she studied at the Royal Academy of Music, London, receiving her LRAM and GRSM certificates in 1957. She started her teaching career at a girl's school in the borough of West Ham, East London following which she took teaching appointments in Hemel Hempstead, Herts and Beckenham, Kent. Following this she spent a year at Bretton Hall College of Education in Yorkshire, receiving a diploma in education, before emigrating to Cranbrook, British Columbia in 1965.

Pat taught music and other subjects at Laurie and Parkland Junior High Schools for eight years, following which she taught for seventeen years at Amy Woodland Elementary School, before retiring in 1990. She particularly enjoyed directing school choirs, and was involved in the production of several musicals, the East Kootenay Music Festival and the Christmas Massed Choir Festival.

Taking Canadian citizenship in 1971, Pat immersed herself in the community of Cranbrook and served as choir director and committee member for many years at the Cranbrook United Church. She also became closely associated with the East Kootenay Regional Hospital Auxiliary Association, the Key City Theatre and the Kootenay Chamber Orchestra.

As a keen water colour painter, Pat loved the outdoors, exploring back roads, downhill skiing, snowshoeing and hiking in the beautiful East Kootenay country. She especially enjoyed the camaraderie of “The Senior Saunterers,” her walking group. She died of Leukemia.
