Notes for Richard Neville Townshend

Richard was born in the MacDonald River area.

His first wife, Kathleen Johnson (1), was a widow with two daughters. His second wife, Marian Lucy Cammock Sharp (Lucy) (2), was the daughter of Edward Sharp and Emma JV Savage (sister of Lucy Savage who married Richard Townsend [254] in 1880). Richard married Lucy at Barraba NSW in 1913 (registration number 14992/1913).

Because there was very little work in Wollombi, Richard, with his brother Thomas [265], left for Barraba, NSW, where they worked as drovers. (Richard's uncle, Richard [254], also moved to Barraba in about 1880 looking for work - see his entry). In 1904 Richard was appointed manager at Victoria River Downs, Northern Territory, which was owned by the Bovril Company. When he retired in 1918 through ill health he and his second wife, Lucy, moved to 'Roseville', Sydney bought a house and named it 'Winari'.

Most of the information in this entry was provided by Marjorie Laidler, grand-daughter of Charlotte Victoria Townshend [280] and supplemented by Mary-Anne Lattimore from Australia, grand daughter of Mary Somerville Townsend [285].

(1) She was born in 1865 and died 23 April 1911, at Victoria River Downs, Northern Territory.

(2) Lucy was born in 1864 and died in a nursing home in Killara, Sydney in 1963 aged 99. They had no children.
