Notes for Elizabeth Townshend
There is some confusion about Elizabeth and her sister Florence and these notes are identical for both entries.
Both of Horace’s daughters are shown in the pedigree drawn up by John FitzHenry Townsend [250] in April 1880 and in ‘thepeerage.com’ but neither is mentioned in 'An Officer of the Long Parliament'. Burke’s Irish Family Records 1976 shows Elizabeth as the sole daughter of Horace Townshend whilst Burke’s Irish Landed Gentry 1912 shows neither daughter in the section devoted to the Townsend family but does show Florence as the wife of Daniel Conner (1) (2). This marriage is reflected in ‘thepeerage.com’. To confuse the issue further the engagement announced in The Irish Times (3) on Saturday 2 November 1901 refers to Miss Essie (Elizabeth ?) Townshend as the sole daughter of Horace.
The wedding took place on 14 January 1902 at Castle Hyde Church, Fermoy, Co Cork (4).
(1) “DANIEL HENRY CONNER, of Ballybricken, co. Cork (Lines End, Winchelsea), b. 5 April, 1867; m. 14 Jan. 1902, Florence Jane, dau. of Capt. Horace Townshend, 99th Regt.” He was the eldest son of Captain Daniel Conner, Royal Marine Light Infantry, of Ballybricken, Monkstown, co. Cork.
(2) Daniel was born in 1867 and was living at 32, Hans Road, Kensington, London SW3 when he died on 18 May 1941.
(3) The engagement was announced in The Irish Times on Saturday 2 November 1901 - "A marriage has been arranged between Daniel Henry CONNER, eldest son of the late Captain Daniel CONNER R.M. Light Infantry and of Mrs. CONNER, of Ballybricken, Monkstown, co. Cork and Miss Essie TOWNSHEND, Creg, Fermoy, sole daughter of Captain Horace TOWNSHEND, the Wiltshire (99th) Regiment, retired of Kincraigie, Courtmacsherry, co. Cork."
(4) The wedding was reported in The Times of 17 January 1902. Doctor Norman Ian Townsend [6C18] was also married in Castle Hyde Church - 2 October 1901.
