Notes for Harriet Elizabeth Barrington Townshend
Harriet was born in Burton on Trent, Staffordhire.
Educated at North London Collegiate School and the Home and Colonial Training College, Harriet taught at various schools in England before taking an appointment to teach at St Cyprian's School in Cape Town, South Africa in 1894. Returning to the UK in 1897, she took up teaching physical training in Bournemouth and lived with her mother at Branksome Park when she moved there in 1901. Later they were joined by Harriet's sister, Florence Townshend [5D41].
When her mother died in 1911, Harriet set up a bed and breakfast business which she ran until she bought 'The Cabin' in Lymington, Solent Avenue, Hampshire in 1923. Her sister Florence [5D41] went to live with her in 1928 and remained with her until she died after a long illness at The Cabin, which Florence subsequently inherited.
