Notes for Reverend Francis Townsend
Alumni Trinity College Dublin from Co Cork and Kerry 1593-1860 in Dr Casey's Collection records that Francis was taught by Mr Fryar of Bandon before he entered Trinity College, Dublin, on 20 Nov 1723 aged 19 as a pensioner who paid a fixed sum annually for his studies. Mr Fryar also tutored Francis' cousin, Horatio Townsend [600], before he entered the University in 1722. The TCD Graduation List shows that he qualified BA in Spring 1728 and MA in Winter 1731.
Francis was appointed to the Curacy of Mourneabbey, in the Diocese of Cloyne on 12 July 1748. See page 257 of Volume III of Brady's Parochial and Clerical Records.
The Preston Collection in Cork City and County Archives has an entry in section E: Strange Estate, 1715 – 1767 - "118. 11 Oct. 1755 Leases of dwelling-house and lands in Dromahane, (Betsborough), barony of Duhallow, Co. Cork, made between Francis Townsend, Millstreet, barony of Muskerry, Co. Cork, (lessor), and Rev. Robert Nettles (1), Dromahane, Co. Cork, (lessee), for 15 years at £52 p.a. Witnessed by William Kingston and James Kingston." Betsborough belonged to Francis' brother, Cornelius Townsend [128] and full details about it can be found in Cornelius' "Scrapbook".
'Cloyne Wills, 1621-1800' records "Townsend, Francis (Rev), Drishane 1762" for granting of probate.
(1) The Rev Nettles was appointed Rector of Mourneabbey on 7 September 1749 and remained there until he died in 1795. His biography can be seen on pages 359/360 of Volume II of Brady's Clerical and Parochial Records
