Notes for John Townsend JP
John was probably born before his father went to Ireland in 1647.
Marriage Settlement dated 1666. Lady Katherine Barry was the 2nd daughter of Richard, 2nd Earl of Barrymore and was aged about 16 when she married. See Burke's Irish Landed Gentry 1912 -Barry.
The Cork Historical and Archaeological Society records that John was appointed a JP on 2 March 1671. He was elected Sovereign of Clonakikty on 18 October 1675; the documents recording this are the oldest surviving records of the town and are reproduced in John’s ‘Scrapbook’.
Katherine married secondly Captain Charles Barclay of London and had a daughter, Elizabeth, who married Captain Richard Willis.
