Notes for Major Edward William Maunsell Townsend
Married February 1945. Pamela Mary Upham was the daughter of William Upham of Keynsham, Bristol, Somerset.
Like his cousin Hugh Hamilton Massy Townsend [6B44] who was but one month younger than him, Edward was educated at Sherborne and Wadham College, Oxford (BA).
The entries in the London Gazette tracing Edward's military career are confusing. It would appear that he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant into the Royal Welsh Regiment on 24 July 1929 (1). Promoted Lieutenant on 3 August 1932 he resigned his commission on 13 September 1933 (2). However, he re-joined the Royal Welsh in November 1934 with seniority back-dated to the date he left (3).
There is no further trace of Edward in the London Gazette until the entry of 3 March 1950 - London Gazette 38852 - which reads "Hon. Maj. Edward William Maunsell TOWNSEND (42387) from Welch R. R.A. Res. of Offrs. to be Capt., 6th Jan. 1950, with seniority 29th Aug. 1941, relinquishing the hon. rank of Maj. 3 March 1950 " This is followed by an entry dated 17 September 1957 (4) which shows him as being promoted to Major on a short service commission in the Royal Army Education Corps.
Edward finally retired, aged 56, on 30 May 1964 (5) but the entry in the Gazette shows him "granted the hon. rank of Maj" which is strange as he was promoted Major seven years previously! He was living at 'The Garden Flat' 6 Staveley Road, Eastbourne, Sussex when he died.
