Married 10 June 1897. Oliver Stokes (1) was the son of Major General Oliver Robert Stokes (2 & 2a) (retd) late Royal Artillery,
The April 1901 Irish Census records Joanna with her husband and their son, living at house 26 in Ballygarran, Ballynahaglish, Kerry with her parents-in-law, various other relations and two domestic staff. The house consisted of 15 rooms, two coach houses and stables. Joanna's father in law owned a further seven small houses in the village. Neither Joanna nor her husband are shown in the 1911 Irish Census.
Oliver Stokes and William Maynard (husband of Elizabeth Constance Townsend [6B26] were executors of the will of Elizabeth and Joanna's mother. Page 751 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Probate of the will of "Frances Dorothea Townsend Late of Wood Lynch Fleet Southampton Widow”, who died on 7 February 1917, was granted at London 17 April 1917 to "Temple W Maynard and Oliver S Stokes". Resealed in Dublin 16 May 1917. Effects in Ireland £3,248 14s 6d.
The son, Oliver Chetwood Stokes was born in 1898.
(1) Oliver was born in 1859 and was employed as a sub agent in the Bank of Ireland.
(2) Major General Stokes retired from the Army and placed on retired pay as a Major General in 1885. London Gazette 4929 dated 27 October 1885.
(3) The entry for Stokes in the University of Galway Landed Estates Database records "The Stokes family first settled in county Limerick in the seventeenth century but gained estates in Kerry by virtue of marriages into several of the landed families of that county. Oliver D. Stokes was one of the principal lessors in the parish of Kilbonane, barony of Magunihy, at the time of Griffith’s Valuation. He also held townlands in the parish of Ratass, barony of Trughanacmy, while Elizabeth Stokes was the lessor of several townlands in the parish of Clogherbrien at the same time. Robert E. Stokes held townlands in the parish of Kilmoyly, barony of Clanmaurice. George D. Stokes owned over 2000 acres in county Kerry in the 1870s."
