Notes for Georgina Maria Townsend
Married 11 September 1845 at Aghada, Co Cork. (1) Richard Thomas Hill CE, son of Rev James Hill Rector of Rostellan.
In a letter dated 24 July 1874 to his sister, Jane, John Tuckey, the husband of Georgina's sister Mary Townsend [6B14] described Richard Hill as "a man of very little brains. He went to Australia years ago as an engineer and from that to New Zealand with the intention of sending for his family; but he has never done any good and never will."
The son, Thomas Lionel Hill, was born in 1848 and educated at Trinity College, Dublin. BA 1872. BD 1882. He was ordained Deacon by the Bishop of Down in 1876 and Priest by the Bishop of Cork in 1881. He was Diocesan Curate of Ardfert and Curate of Tralee 1879-1881; Curate of Corkbeg, Cloyne, 1881-84; Rector of Kilmeen, Ross, 1884-1888. He was appointed Rector of Novohal in 1888. He married, on 8 January 1885, Rebecca Morgan, daughter of JW Lindsay JP of Janeville, Blackrock, Cork. They had two sons, Lionel George William and Lindsay Arthur; and two daughters, Anna Somerville and Georgina Townsend. Thomas died on 28 December 1891, aged 42 years and the brass lectern in Nohoval Church was dedicated to his memory by his widow. Thomas' biographical biographical details can be seen on page 97 in Reverend John Harding Cole's Church and Parish Records of the United Diocese of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, covering the period 1863 to 1903 and published in 1903.
Georgina is buried in St Catherine's Church, Summergrove, Kinsale, alongside her mother. The inscription on their headstone reads “ISABELLA TOWNSEND WIDOW OF THE REV W.R.TOWNSEND RECTOR OF AGHADA AND DAUGHTER OF THE LATE MAJOR GENERAL BROOKE YOUNG R.A. DIED 11TH JANUARY 1872. AGED 81 YEARS "EVER WITH THE LORD" 1.THESS.4.17. ERECTED Y HER CHILDREN IN LOVING REMEMBRANCE. ALSO HER DAUGHTER GEORGINA HILL WHO DIED 1ST MARCH 1897 AGED 76.”
