Notes for Athelny Townshend (Lonz)

Like his father, his brother Julian Townshend [6A55], and his cousin, Philip John Townshend [6A52], Lonz was educated at Summerhill School in Leiston, Suffolk.

Married 1st. Carol Victoria Kemble in 1984. Separated/divorced? post 1987?. Married 2nd. Pat ? in 19?? (1)

When he graduated from Middlesex Poly (now Middlesex University) in the early seventies with a Sociology degree Lonz's strong attachment to the International Socialists led him to become a worker-militant at Thorne’s Electrical. He soon became a shop-steward, but was eventually sacked. Following this he joined the print shop at the Socialist Worker and developed his talents as a printer.

Following his first marriage and the arrival of children, he decided to move back to his beloved Suffolk from London and work for a printing firm in Saxmundham, whilst living in Halesworth. When the firm went out of business he retrained as a primary school teacher, a job he loved. Sadly, with the onset of Parkinsons and the new teaching regime in education he found difficulty in coping.

Lonz took early retirement, and with much help from his second wife Pat, set up a successful antiques glass business.

To the very last Lonz was a bon viveur; he loved good wine and good food in both quantity and quality and was a superb cook.

(1) It was a romantic wedding with a horsedrawn carriage taking them from their home in Halesworth to the wedding in St Peter's Brewery, near Bungay in Suffolk, formerly a medieval manor house.
