Notes for Brevet Major Richard Samuel Hungerford Townshend

Richard was commissioned into the 3rd Battalion, The Leicestershire Regiment (a Militia unit) on 12 January 1907 (1) and was promoted Lieutenant a year later. The battalion, having completed the prescribed period of training, was transferred to the Army Reserve and the Officers were transferred to the Special Reserve of Officers on 28 July 1908 (2).

Whilst there is no traceable record in the London Gazette, Richard re-joined the army in about 1910 for he is shown in the Gazette as being promoted to Lieutenant in the North Staffordshire Regiment (The Prince of Wales's) on 12 February 1911 (3). Seconded for service with the Army Pay Department in September 1912 (4), this transfer was confirmed as permanent in 1914 (5). It is not known what Richard did during the First World War but he was promoted Captain on 6 January 1917 (6) and retired on 17 March 1926 (7).

Richard must have re-joined the army on the outbreak of the Second World War for he was promoted Brevet Major on 8 November 1939 (8) when he would have been 51. He finally retired on 27 October 1946 when he was shown as a "War Subs Staff Paymr 2nd Cl" (9).

Burke's Irish Family Records show Richard as a professional conjuror!
