Notes for Caroline Townsend
Caroline was born in Dharwar, India. where her father Edward worked for the East India Company. His marked ability brought rapid promotion from Lord Clare who was Governor of Bombay 1830 to 1834. Later Edward was appointed Secretary to the Bombay Government and then Revenue Commissioner to The Presidency of Bombay.
In her journal Caroline's mother wrote very movingly and at great length about the death of baby Caroline. From her description of events and symptoms it would appear that Caroline contracted meningitis and died with the space of 24 hours.
