Notes for Edward Hume Steele Townshend

Edward was born in Belgaum, Karnataka, where his father was the Collector and Political Agent for the East India Company and later Secretary to the Bombay Government and Revenue Commissioner to The Presidency. In her Journal his mother records May 27th 1840. Satara. Maharashtra. We came on after dinner to Satara. We were brought in safety to Belgaum on the 12th of June and on the 19th master Edward Hume Steele Townsend made his appearance unexpectedly, but not the less welcome and a fine healthy little boy.

Belgaum (Belegavi), India. His father, a member of the Indian Civil Service, was Secretary to the Bombay Government and later Revenue Commissioner to The Presidency.

Alumni Trinity College Dublin from Co Cork and Kerry 1593-1860 in Dr Casey's Collection records that Edward was taught by Mr Ryder in Tipperary before he entered Trinity College, Dublin, on 2 July 1860 aged 20 as a pensioner who paid a fixed sum annually for his studies.

Having just graduated from Trinity College, Edward was killed by a fall of rocks on the Dent de Jaman, Switzerland.

He is buried in the cemetery at Montreux.
