Notes for Desmond Charles Richard Townshend
Married 1st 27 December 1958. Evelyn Betty Stoddart (1) was the daughter of Eric Stoddart formerly of Dartrey, Cootehill, Co Cavan. Married 2nd 3 November 2001. Ruby Evelyn Rothwell (2).
Desmond was educated in England and then privately. Accepted for entry to Trinity College, Dublin, he elected instead to spend one year as a farm apprentice in Kildare before returning to assist on the home farm at Kilmeany, Carlow. Following this he went to England to train as an agricultural engineer and graduated with honours in 1959, becoming a Member of the British Institute of Agricultural Engineers (MI Agr E). He then spent several years working on large arable farms in the east of England.
In 1963 Desmond returned to Ireland with his family and started an agricultural engineering company in Bagenalstown, Co. Carlow, later to become the Tanco Engineering Group, manufacturers and exporters of agricultural machinery. In 1996 he resigned as Chairman and Managing Director of the Group and returned to managing the home farm at Kilmeany before making this over to his daughter Ruth Townshend [5C32] and retiring.
(1) Betty was born in 1932 and died of cancer on 21 July 2000. Her obituary appeared in The Carlow Nationalist on Friday 4th August 2000.
(2) Evelyn was born on 9 October 1944.
