Notes for Claud R Townsend RN
Commissioned in 1924, Claud was an 'Observer Officer' (1) in the Royal Navy on board HM Submarine M2 when it sank in West Bay (Lyme Bay), off Portland. M2 was laid down in 1916 and designed to support the Grand Fleet. In 1927 her gun was replaced with a Parnall Pixie seaplane and hanger.
An account of the sinking of M2 is given in 'Submarine M2 and her subsequent loss'.
(1) As an 'Observer Officer' Claud must have been in the Fleet Air Arm.
