Notes for Thomas Philip Barry Townsend

Thomas was born in Kilbeggan, Westmeath.

Thomas enrolled as a cadet in the Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC 58073) (1) on 14 April 1897 (London Gazette 26844 dated 20 April 1897). He was appointed District Inspector 3rd class on 18 December 1897 and served in many places throughout Ireland before being discharged on a provisional pension of £303.3s.6d. on 16 July 1921 as a result of an accidental injury in Belfast in 1919. His Service Record is given in his 'Scrapbook' and shows that he was commended on several occasions.

The April 1901 Irish Census and the April 1911 Irish Census both record Thomas as single and a District Inspector Royal Irish Constabulary. In the 1901 Census he is shown as a lodger living at house 8 in Broad Street Magherafelt, Londonderry and in the 1911 Census as living in a two roomed flat at 34 Drumbiggle Road, Ennis, Co Clare.

Probate on his father's estate was granted to Thomas on 15 September 1922. The abstract in the PRONI Calendar of Wills records "Administration of the Estate of Norman Lionel Townsend late of Cathedral Close Armagh County Armagh Retired Magistrate who died 7 June 1922 granted at Belfast to Thomas Philip Barry Townsend Retired District Inspector R.I.C. Effects £2639 18s. 5d."

Probate on Thomas' estate was granted on 28 October 1932. The abstract in the PRONI Calendar of Wills records "Townsend Thomas Philip Barry of Cathedral Close Armagh county Armagh retired district inspector R.I.C. died 5 July 1932 Administration Belfast 28 October to Norman Singleton Barry Townsend gentleman. Effects £2402 6s. 7d." * His brother Norman Singleton Barry Townsend [5A18]
