Notes for Norman Singleton Barry Townsend
Norman was born in Co Kildare.
Married 1908. Elizabeth Jane Creery was born in Dublin in 1874 (1).
Norman is not shown in the April 1901 Irish Census but the April 1911 Irish Census records him as an electrical engineer aged 35 living in a 16 roomed house at 34 Church Road, Hollywood, Down with his wife, three young children, his mother in law, Elizabeth Sarah Creery aged 62, and a domestic.
An announcement in the London Gazette 31865 of 13 April 1920 states "Royal Irish Rifles - Temp. Lt. N. S. B. Townsend relinquishes his commission on completion of service, 4 Mar. 1920, and retains the rank of Lt." This is unlikely to be Norman who would have been 44 at the time he relinquished his commission!
Nothing further is known about Norman.
(1) Elizabeth died on 29 December 1940. The abstract in the PRONI Calendar of Wills records "Townsend Elizabeth Jane of 67 Bryansburn Road Bangor county Down died 29 December 1940 Administration Belfast 20 August 1941 to Norman Singleton Barry Townsend gentleman the husband. Effects £81 11s."
