Eric was born at Lake Cargelligo, NSW.
Being 37 years old on the outbreak of the Second World War, Eric initially enlisted into the Volunteer Defence Corps. Later that year on Christmas Day he transferred to the Sydney Coastal Artillery where he remained unitl his discharge on 7 November 1945. His service record shows that he was living at West Wyalong when he enlisted and that his next of kin was 'Catherine Townsend' so he must have been married as his mother's name was Margaret.
