Robert was educated at Midleton College and Trinity College, Dublin. Freda came from Bantry and they were married on 28 July 1962.
Of the children:
Mark Robert Salter-Townshend was born on 18 September 1963. He married Anne Therese Minihane (1) on 16 May 1992 and had a daughter, Abbie Therese, who was born on 5 May 2001.
Richard Jordayne Salter-Townshend was born on 3 December 1965. He married Karen Hunt (2) on 22 May 1993. They had two sons - Adam Edwin James, who was born on 1 July 2003, and Luke Robert Hugo, who was born on 17 June 2005.
