William was born in Aghada, Cloyne, Co Cork.
The April 1901 Irish Census records William living at house 13 in Aghada, Corkbeg, Cork, with his parents, siblings and two domestic staff. The house consisted of eleven rooms, a coach house, a stable and 13 further outbuildings. The 1911 Irish Census shows that William, aged 40, was living in a very modest six roomed house at 15 Aghada Town Lower with his father Thomas, aged 82, his sister Clare aged 33, his sister Helana, aged 47, and one female servant.
