Married 1st 7 May 1948. Lena Moncrieff Westropp (1), Alderman GLC, was the daughter of Captain Richard Gibbings Westropp of Camberley, Surrey. Married 2nd 17 February 1965. Suzanne Maria Richardson daughter of Donald Southwell Richardson. Like his brother Edward Walter Townsend [6B41], John was educated at Winchester and Magdalene College, Oxford (BA 1935). CBE 1976. Director ICI. Chairman Governing Body Chelsea College, London University. Chairman British and European Chemical Industries Associations.
