Notes for Madeleine Alexandre Townshend
Madeleine was born in Dublin and baptized at St Peter's Church on 9 March 1863.
Record 1869 from 'Directory of Sources for Women's History in Ireland' in the National Archives - 'Diary of Madeleine Townshend of Ballsbridge, Dublin, daughter of Charles Uniacke Townsend. In English, French, Italian and German. Partly an account of the social engagements, reading and musical habits of a middle-class family in suburban Dublin in the 1880s and partly a confessional diary of a period in her life of religious fervour, with a number of devotional tales. Madeleine Townshend taught at Sunday School, went to lectures at the Rotunda and the Asylum, attended the Molyneux and would have attended a loyalist meeting in Ballsbridge, had there been more people there. She notes, 'I should like to have a reading of an hour with the servants every day, to read them an amusing book to enliven their days a bit, what ceaseless monotony is theirs'.
