Notes for Frederick William Chisholm Loftus Townshend
Frederick was born in Dublin and baptized at St Stephen's Church, Dublin, on 6 January 1898.
Frederick was educated at Winton House, Winchester, and Haileybury College, where he served in the Officer Training Corps (OTC). Narrowly missing admission to the Royal Military College Sandhurst, because he was too old, he enlisted in the Seaforth Highlanders in Dublin and joined the Trinity College OTC as an officer cadet in February 1917. Hoping to be commissioned into the North Irish Horse, he was sent to No.2 Cavalry Cadet Squadron at Kildare for officer training in May 1917.
Frederick was commissioned on 15 December 1917 and posted to the North Irish Horse reserve regiment at Antrim, where he remained for the duration of the war. He relinquished his commission on 1 April 1920 and was granted the rank of lieutenant (with seniority from 15 June 1919).
In 1921 Frederick emigrated to Rhodesia at the same time as his brother Edward Arthur Townsend [5C18] "having been approved by the British South African Company as a settler in connection with free gifts of land to ex-officers".
When Edward bought the farm at Rutherdale, near Shamva north of Salisbury, where he had been a farm pupil, Frederick joined him in a form of partnership. Frederick, however was more interested in developing golf courses and he established one in Cape Town and another in Salisbury. He also founded a country club by the Salisbury golf club and this he bequeathed to them on his death. There is a fine portrait of him hanging in the club.
Frederick died in Harare.
Edward and Frederick were aware of the farm at Lowdale established by Thomas Crofton Croker Townsend [5B15], who emigrated to Rhodesia in 1903, but there was little contact between the two families.
