Notes for Thomas Loftus Uniacke Townshend
Thomas was born in Dublin and baptized at St Peter's Church on 28 September 1864.
Married 1st 14 July 1891. Maud Ogilvie (1) was the fifth daughter of the Hon Edward David Stewart Ogilvie of Yulgilbar, Clarence River, New South Wales, Australia. See Burke's Colonial Gentry - Ogilvie. Married 2nd 8 June 1910. Harriet Hockley Weldon (2) was the 5th daughter of Major-General Walter Weldon of Forenaughts, Naas Co Kildare, formerly of the Madras Army. See Burke's Peerage - Weldon.
Thomas was educated at Uppingham (3) and Trinity College, Dublin, though there is no record of this. Following this he worked in his father's well established Land Agency practice in Molesworth Street, Dublin.
It would appear that Thomas and his brother, Charles Loftus Townshend [5C01] were living at Castletownshend before the auction of the estate in June 1897. In a letter to Dorothea, wife of Richard Baxter Townsend [5D15], dated 31 July 1896 Hildegarde Coghill wrote the following - "We like the de Bunsen Townshends very much, old Madame(she is not really old) is especially nice and all the Hatley Townshends are as nice as possible. The son, Loftus is adorable with a most perfect tenor voice. He married a Miss Ogilvie, an Australian girl also very nice. It is pleasant having the Castle full again."(4)
The April 1901 Irish Census shows Thomas, a Land Agent aged 36, living at house 114 in Leeson Park, Rathmines & Rathgar East, Dublin, with his wife Maud, their daughter Theodosia and three domestic staff. The April 1911 Irish Census records Thomas, living at 7 Palmerston Park, Dublin, with his second wife Harriet, his brother in law and two domestic staff.
A considerable amount of correspondence between Thomas and his distant Cousin Sylvia Townshend [268] about her tax affairs in 1924 and 1928 is to be found amongst the Lovera Papers.
‘Slater’s Royal National Directory of Ireland, 1894’ records under the heading ‘Munster Parishes - Kilmallock, Co Limerick. Private Residents’ - “Townsend Loftus, Fairfield house.” This should be 'Fairyfield House'; a delightful picture of the house by his daughter, Theodosia, is contained in Thomas' 'Scrapbook'
(1) Maud was born in 1865 and died on 6 February 1907 of tuberculosis. Page 462 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Administration of the estate of "Maud Townshend formerly of Fairyfield Kilmallock County Limerick and late of 8 St James’s Terrace Clonskeagh County Dublin" who died on 6 February 1907 at latter place, was granted at Dublin on 13 May 1907 to " Thomas L Uniacke Townshend Land Agent the Husband". Effects £301 4s 11d.
(2) Harriet was born in 1877 and died on 26 August 1941.
(3) His distant cousin Ernest Townsend [536] was there at the same time.
