Notes for Annie Elizabeth Townsend
Annie (1) married in the district of St Peter's (2), Sydney in 1897 (Registration No 6308/1897). Alfred Paine (3) affectionately known as "Waar" was the second of seven children born to the Alfred Paine and Mary Farrell at Blacktown.
Annie died at Macksville, NSW and her body was transported to Sydney for burial in the 'Old Church of England' section at Rookwood Cemetery with her husband Alfred and daughters Gladys and Alice.
The NSW 'Registers of Police' show that Alfred joined the 'Foot' division of the NSW Police Force as a 'Probation Constable' on the 24 September 1891, when he would have been 25, and was appointed to the Metropolitan District of Sydney. His enlistment papers record that he was nearly 6' 4" tall, had blue eyes, brown hair and a fresh/sallow complexion. Alfred's record of service ends in September 1908 when he was a Senior Constable. However family photos of him in uniform show him with three stripes with a crown above indicating he could have been a 1st class or 'crown' sergeant.

Gladys Paine was born on 27 August 1898 and died on 10 February 1899.
Alfred Edward Paine was born in 1900 and died in 1959. He married Ethel Laura Heckenber in 1938 and had three children; Yvonne, Lynda and Edward.
Alice Irene Paine was born in 1902 and died on 1 August 1939. She married Richard J Crocker in Ashfield in 1923 and had a daughter; Elma June (Bonnie) who married Hugh Thomas Higgins in 1943.
Lillian Annie Paine was born on 9 February 1911 and died 6 August 1972. She married Robert Francis Bartlett (b. 1906 d. 1984) on 15 September 1928 and had two sons; Leslie Robert (b. 30 April 1931) and Peter Alfred (b. 20 April 1938) (4). Leslie married Mary Margaret Innes in 1952 and had one son and three daughters. Peter married Margaret Bonny Fletcher in 1962 and had four sons and one daughter.
(1) Annie was born at Costerfield, Victoria, formerly a gold mining centre near Wappentake Creek.
(2) Her brother, Thomas William Townsend [5A30], was also married
(3) Alfred was born on 4 June 1866 and died on 26 September 1931.
