George was born in Whroo (1), Victoria and died in his home at 106 Darley Street, Newtown, Sydney, NSW. His father, Edward Carr Townsend [5A01], bought this property sometime between 1881 and 1884 when he moved to Sydney after his service with the mounted police in the goldfields of Victoria.
(1) Gold was discovered at Whroo in 1853 at the famous Balaclava Mine but the site is now deserted.
