Notes for Richard Stapleton Barry Townsend
Richard was commissioned into the Royal Irish Fusiliers.
The April 1901 Irish Census and the April 1911 Irish Census both record Richard as living at 14 Cathedral Close, Armagh, with his parents and his brother Arthur. The 1901 Census shows him as a scholar but nothing is given under the heading 'Occupation' in 1911. The house consisted of 19 rooms with a coach house and stable.
Richard was killed at the Battle of the Somme, aged 32 years. He is commemorated in St Patrick's Cathedral, Armagh; (WO 339/14291). Page 692 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Administration of the estate of "Richard Stapleton Barry Townsend late of Armagh 2nd Lieutenant RIF" who was killed in action on 1 July 1916 in France, was granted at Armagh on 27 November 1916 to "Norman L Townsend RM (Retired)". Effects £711 11s 10d.
