Notes for Helen Agnes (Joan) Townsend
The April 1901 Irish Census records that Helen, aged 23, was a spinster living with her parents at 11 Westbourne Terrace, Queenstown. She is not shown in the 1911 Irish Census.
Married 19 October 1901 at Queenstown, Cork. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Frank Rundall RE CMG DSO (1) of Trezion, St Ives, Cornwall was the son of JW Rundall, Indian Public Works Department.
Charles was educated at Oundle and after attending RMC Woolwich was commissioned into the Royal Engineers in 1891. During WWI he was Mentioned in Dispatches five times and awarded the DSO in 1917. Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in 1918, appointed CMG in 1919, he left the army in 1923.
Of the children:
Francis Rundall was born 11 September 1908. He was educated at Marlborough and Cambridge following which he joined the Foreign Service in 1930. During the following ten years he served in Antwerp, Cologne, Panama, Boston and Barcelona. For most of the Second World War he was Consul in New York following which he returned to London. Francis was appointed Ambassador to Israel in 1956 and remained there until his appointment as Ambassador to Japan in 1963 where he remained until 1967. He was Knighted GCMG (2). He married Mary Synett at Nayland, Suffolk on 26 January 1935 and died in 1987. They had two children:
Susan Rundall who married Donald Wood.
John Rundall.
Joan Rundall was born 23 January 1904 and married Arthur Bryant at Eastbourne on 25 November 1976. She died in 1995.
Diane Mary Hayne Rundall was born 21 August 1913, married Keith Somerville Laurie at St Ives on 7 December 1950 and died 4 February 1984. They had two daughters:
Jane Laurie was born in 1951 and married Alan Chubb in 1981. They had two children - Matthew Chubb who was born in 1988 and Duncan Chubb who was born in 1990.
Veryan Laurie who was born in 1954 and married Neal Young in 1976. They had two children - Tamsin Young who was born in 1982, and married Michael Broadstock in 2010, and Patrick Young who was born in 1984.
(1) Charles was born on 25 June 1871 and died on 15 September 1951.
