Notes for Thomas William FitzGerald Townsend

Thomas was born in Cork

Married 1905. Nothing is known about Mary.

The 1911 Irish Census records that Thomas was a 40 year old retired gentleman farmer living in a modest six roomed house in Williamstown, Youghal. Co Cork, with his wife (1), three young children and two domestic staff.

The National Archives of Ireland contain a letter written by Thomas seeking compensation under the Damage to Property (Compensation) Act 1923 for “Destruction and seizure of trees at Ardnagashel, Bantry, County Cork, by unknown persons on 16 July 1921 and 18 August 1921.” His address at the time was The Terrace, Bantry, County Cork.

A letter dated 7 October 1952 written by Thomas to Ethel Mary Townsend on the occasion of the death of her husband Thomas Henry Denny Townsend [5A10] is headed Kingston College, Mitchelstown. It must be deduced therefore that aged 81, Thomas was resident there. Kingston College was intended originally for former tenants of Lord Kingston’s estate, which is long since gone. The houses are now occupied mostly by retired, people from all walks of life and from all parts of Ireland and beyond. Each house is a separate, self-contained unit, with garden and out-offices, and the residents live completely independently, while still enjoying the benefits of being part of a community.

Thomas was an executor of his father's will. Page 609 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Probate of the will of "Robert Uniacke Fitzgerald Townsend late of Ringville Queenstown County Cork Land Agent ”, who died on 16 April 1911 at Ivern Youghal, was granted at Cork on 13 November 1911 to "Thomas Fitzgerald William Townsend Gentleman and William Cox Langford Land Agent." Effects £3,442 18s 1d.

(1) Mary was born in Cork 1872.
