Notes for Arthur Edward Townsend

Aged 29, Arthur was admitted to Inner Temple in London in 1892, but nothing is known about his further career.

The April 1901 Irish Census shows Edward, aged 38 and unmarried, living at Myross with his mother and his sister Ellen Beatrice. His occupation is not listed. Guy's City and County Cork Almanac and Directory for 1907 page 380 records Arthur and his brother Ernest Townshend [536] as living at Myross - "Townshend A E, Myross wood " and "Townshend Major Ernest, R E, Myross wood".

Arthur was an executor of his mother's will. Page 516 of The Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Probate of the will of "Katherine Emma Townshend late of Myross Wood Leap County Cork Widow”, who died on 26 March 1907, was granted at Dublin on 21 June 1907 to "Arthur E Townshend Esquire". Effects £1,345 14s 2d.

Guy's City and County Cork Almanac and Directory 1913 page 387 records that Arthur was still living at Myross that year but, rather strangely, there is no record of him, or any other member of the family, living at Myross in the 1911 Irish Census.

Arthur was living at Rock Villa on The Wyche, Malvern, Worcestershire when he died. He is buried in Great Malvern Cemetery and the inscription on his headstone reads, 'Sacred to the memory of Arthur Edward Townshend, who entered into rest October 23rd 1927. All things work together for good, to them who love God. Romans 8.28'

Probate on Arthur's will was granted to his sister Ellen Beatrice Townshend [544].
