Notes for Eliza Townsend

Following the death of her parents in 1847 shortly after their arrival in Canada from Ireland, Eliza, then aged 6, was placed in care with guardians appointed by the authorities in Ontario. The Canadian Census of 1852 (2), when she was aged 11, shows her as being a servant in the employ of Mr Henry Izard, aged 33, a school teacher, and his wife Pamela, aged 23 living in Woodstock township, Oxford county.

Eliza's daughter, Emma, wrote in an essay (3):-

"Mother was given to some family, I forgot the name now, but they were prominent people. One son (of the family) became a member of parliament later. She cried so for her mother (4) they gave her up and a family named Leynolds(5) took her. She grew up there and when the old people died she lived with a son's family, who came to Petrolia during the oil boom. Father [Buchanan] came about the same time."

Married Unknown Buchanan ca 1865 in Ontario, Canada.

(3) Essay written by Emma Buchanan in about 1935-40 from Petrolia, Ontario and transcribed by Gracie Townsend [3B27] in 1993. Between 1992 and 1997, Gracie extensively researched members of the family descended from Richard Townsend [335]. This work has been invaluable in compiling the records of those concerned.

(4) Maria who died of typhoid.

(5) The name 'Leynolds' is not shown in the 1852 census. There are however many 'Reynolds'.
