Maria was born in Dunmanway, Co Cork. Along with her sister Eliza, she died of ‘Shipping Fever’ (typhoid) during quarantine at Toronto.
Page 639 of the Calendar of Wills and Administration 1858-1922 in the National Archives of Ireland records that Letters of Administration on the personal estate of "Maria Townsend late of Toronto Canada", who died on 9 July 1847 were granted at the Principal Registry on 24 January 1873 to "John Emanuel Hughes of 13 Suffolk Street Dublin Solicitor the Attorney of the Brothers and Sisters of said deceased".
