Notes for Robert Edgar Townsend (Robbie)
Married 22 January 1972 at Lake Cargellico. Vivienne Leigh Attwood (1) came from Coolah, NSW and was better known as Topsy.
Robert was educated at Lake Cargellico Central School following which he joined his brother, Donald Townsend [3A29] at Yanco Agricultural High School. It was here that Robert developed his passion for sport and this dominated his life. After three years at Yanco Robert returned to Lake Cargellico and joined his father's Stock and Station Agency. Later he took employment with Beaurepaire Tyre Services finally buying the franchise in 1994.
On the sporting side, Robert was first and foremost a rugby player and the highlight for him in this was representing Riverina against New Zealand in 1967 at Ron Crowe Oval in West Wyalong. In addition to his prowess on the rugby field he was a first class rugby coach, played Australian football and later in life took to playing tennis, golf and bowls. He was awarded the Australian Sports Medal in 2000 for his outstanding contribution over 30 years.
Robert died at Lake Cargellico hospital after a long and brave battle against cancer. He is buried in Lake Cargellico Cemetery.
