Notes for Laura Townshend
Laura's father was Dr William Beckwith Carr who died when she was very young and Dr Charles Bryan Townsend [347] bought William's medical practice in Long Eaton, Derbyshire. In doing so he met Laura's mother, Mary Ann (Marian) (nee Sweet), and fell in love with her. Marian was initially reluctant to marry as she already had four children by William. Charles' mother Agnes wrote to Marian encouraging her to marry Charles and this they finally did on 14 November 1878. Charles adopted Marian's children and changed their surname to Townshend.
Laura and her step-sister Kathleen Townsend [371] started a girls school in London, called St Faith's and then went on to buy a substantial property in Somerset where they established another school, St Audries, Minehead which continued as such until 1990.
