Notes for Richard Townsend
Richard was educated at Eton following which he entered Christ Church, Oxford as a gentleman commoner (1) where he died suddenly aged 19. His death was announced on page 255 of Walker's Hibernian Chronicle of April 1805 - "At Oxford university, Richard Townsend Esq, eldest son of Richard Boyle Townsend of Castletownsend Co Cork Esq."
(1) A wealthy or married undergraduate, who pays extra to “common” (i.e. dine) at the fellows' table. At Cambridge University the term is 'fellow commoner'.
