Notes for Mary Townsend
There is possible doubt and confusion about whom Mary married and about whether she married more than once.
Judge John FitzHenry Townsend [250] shows Mary married to John Owen son of Colonel Owen of Stadham, Oxford who settled near Baltimore in 1660. Colonel Owen was married to Margaret daughter of Sir William Piers of Tristernagh, Co Meath. However the 1976 Edn of Burke's Irish Family Records shows John Owen marrying a 'daughter' of Colonel Richard Townsend.
In the copy of 'An Officer of the Long Parliament' that belonged to Richard Baxter Townsend [5D15] there are two notes. The first shows Maria (Mary?) as the daughter of Colonel Richard and widow of ? Owen marrying Daniel MacCarthy Reagh of Courtmacsherry and MP for Bandon in 1689. They had two daughters and Daniel died in 1691. The book ‘Irish Pedigrees; or the Origin and Stem of the Irish Nation’ by John O'Hart bears this out - “Donal MacCarthy Reagh (who raised a regiment of Foot for James II.), m. Maria, dau. of Colonel Richard Townsend, of Castletown, and dying in 1691 was interred at Timoleague.”
The second note is of a "marriage bond dated April 1692 showing a Mary Townsend of Clonakilty marrying Richard Beamish of Garranelaghane with John Homes as witness". The Beamish website shows "Richard of Upper Bolteen or Mount Beamish, and of Garranloughans or Willsgrove, (lands purchased by him from Charles Alleyn in 1696) who was the third son of Francis and Catherine (Bernard) Beamish of Kilmaloda." The second note in 'An Officer of the Long Parliament' is supported by the entry in Burke's Irish Landed Gentry 1912 which shows a 'Mary Townsend' marrying Richard Beamish, the third son of Francis Beamish of Kilmalooda and Catherine, daughter of Francis Bernard MP of Castle Bernard, in 1695. Richard lived at Mount Beamish, Boulteen, County Cork, Ireland, and at Willsgrove, Enniskeane, County Cork, purchased from Charles Alleyn in 1696. He was living in November 1750. The note is further supported by page 127 of Gillman's 'Index to the Marriage Licence Bonds of the Diocese of Cork and Ross' which records a Marriage Bond dated 1695 with Richard Beamish.
Of the children from the Beamish marriage:
Rev John Beamish MA of Maulbrack, Co Cork, was born in 1697 and married Elizabeth, daugther of George Morris JP of Benduff, in 1740 and died in 1777 leaving issue.
George Beamish of Mountbeamish married Frances, daughter of Henry Jones JP of Drombeg, Co Cork, in 1748 and had issue.
Captain William Beamish RN of Willsgrove married Alice (d. 1773), daughter of Major William North Ludlow Bernard of Castle Bernard in 1750 and had issue.
Thomas Beamish married Dorothy, daughter of Samuel Swete JP of Kilglas, Co. Cork, in 1738 and died without issue.
Jane Beamish married Thomas Beamish of Raharoon, in 1728.
(1) The entry for Kilmaloda House in the National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway Connacht and Munster Landed Estates Database records "Thomas Beamish held this property in fee at the time of Griffith's Valuation, when it was valued at £50. In 1837, Lewis refers to it as the seat of Sampson Beamish. In 1906 it was owned by Sampson Beamish and valued at £68 15s. Local sources suggest it was built by the earlier Sampson Beamish and occupied by his descendants until the mid twentieth century when it came into the hands of the McCarthy-Murrough family. There is still an extant house at the site."
