Notes for Helen Townshend

Married 5 January 1858 in Nice, Colonel Charles Holder (1), Scots Guards, as his second wife.

The 1871 Census shows them living at Farnham, Surrey, with six servants. It also shows that Helen was born in Pira in Italy; there is no 'Pira' in Italy so it is either Pisa or Pira, Spain. This connection is hard to establish as there is no evidence of Helen's father travelling in Italy or Spain; nevertheless he had a cousin Elizabeth [444] who moved to Italy sometime in the middle of the 19th century and is know to have been living in Florence in 1863. The marriage in Nice is more readily explained as Richard Mellifont Townsend [236], a distant cousin of Helen, lived there from time to time and in a letter dated 16 April 1874, Edward Hume Townsend [626] wrote that Richard had 'fixed himself permanently at Nice'.

(1) Charles was born in 1822 in Ludlow, Shropshire.
