Radius compatibility

Post by ehsan » Wed Apr 06, 2016 5:22 am

Dear Rich,
I am still using GYRE v.4.3, and I simply noticed that the star radius in the GYRE input file (produced by MESA) is not equal to the last value in the radius column. As an example, In the header of my file, the R_star is 0.194141167554E+12, while the last radius value in the column is 1.9478956761917606e+11.
Therefore, the ratio of the two is:
0.194141167554E+12 / 1.9478956761917606e+11 = 0.9966712793036036

Would you please enlighten me on this difference?

Regards
Ehsan.

Hi Ehsan --

The interpretation of R_star is largely set by the evolutionary code -- GYRE then uses what it's given.

In the case of MESA models, R_star represents the photospheric radius. If an atmosphere is included with the model, then some of the outermost grid points may have r > R_star.

Hope this explains!

cheers,

Rich
