7/17/97 Notes on gluing first 5x5 IFU. - Align ends of fibers in each row to cut down on polishing time - Apply tabs to hold each row of fibers firmly in place - Size jaws of construction jig to match size of array (will be particularly important when using 200 micron fibers) - Apply epoxy to 3 inch length of each row. Spread with 400 micron fiber. When all fibers have been coated with epoxy, use the application fiber to wipe away excess glue. Apply epoxy to both sides if row. - Place row in jig. Let front of row extend past edge of jaws. Push all rows even with the front edge of the jaws. Again, this should minimize fiber polishing. - After each row is placed in jig, use the tamper to press the fibers into position while examining the front with the microscope. If too much glue covers front of array, wipe away with application fiber. - When all rows have been put in place, press whole array tight with tamper held in place by a weight. Adjusting the micrometer on the jig will maximize packing. - Dry glue under the UV heat lamp. Dray time is roughly ?? hours.
