TITLE: A Search for Galaxies with a Variable Nucleus AUTHORS: Trevese, D., Bershady, M. A., Kron, R. G. PUBLISHED: to appear in proceedings of "ESO/IAC Workshop on Quasar Hosts," (Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, Spain) ABSTRACT: We have selected a sample of candidate AGNs with extended images on the basis of variability, to B=22.5 in Selected Area 57. Most of the objects have colors typical of AGNs. The brightest three of them have been observed spectroscopically and show emission lines typical of Seyfert I galaxies. Variability, as a detection criterion, allows us to fill a region of the redshift-luminosity plane containing intrinsically faint QSOs or high redshift Seyfert I galaxies.
