Volans
Position in the Sky
A constellation called Piscis Volans was invented by Johann Bayer. The constellation we now
call simply Volans is southwest of Carina
and east of the Large Magellanic Cloud. It has been said by sailors
in the south seas that they had seen schools of flying fish and this
may have been where the inspiration came from to name this group of
stars Volans. Volans was also called Passer, the Sparrow, by Johannes
Kepler.
Pam Eastlick has contributed a great description of
Argo Navis and its associated
constellations as seen from Guam.
