Tucana
Position in the Sky
Tucana was named Toucan by Johann
Bayer. Other astronomers, such as Kepler and Riccioli, called it
Anser Americanus (the American Goose), but it was the Latinized form
of Bayer's designation that stood the test of time. It occupies a
piece of the sky south of Grus and Phoenix and north of Hydrus, all three of which were also named by
Bayer.
Tucana contains the Small Magellanic Cloud, a small irregular galaxy
that orbits the Milky Way.
