Dorado

Position in the Sky

Dorado was named by Johann Bayer. Although I have said above that Dorado is the Swordfish, it is more correctly translated as the Goldfish. This far south constellation is not named after the pet goldfish, but after the mahi-mahi, a Hawaiian fish. Some old star atlases call this constellation Xiphias, the Swordfish

Dorado contains part of the Large Magellanic Cloud, an irregular galaxy that orbits the Milky Way.
